How can one know which brand of herbal supplements is best and most credible?

I spend alot of money buying alot of herbal and nutritional supplements, but lately I’ve been wondering how one can know which supplements truly contain the ingredients that they claim in the amounts that they claim, and whether they are manufactured with quality standards, etc. Since they aren’t regulated, how can one know for sure. Are there any brands that are frequently tested by independent labs, and how does one know that the supplement company is not just paying off the lab to give it a passing score? I’m obsessing over this but don’t know how to find credible information about it. Can anyone help? Thank you.

Good question, because these products are essentially unregulated. http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/ds-savvy.html Sometimes they are contaminated. Here’s a list of supplement warnings and recalls from the FDA: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/ds-warn.html This site claims to review supplements, but you need to suscribe. The NIH has a review of the site, but doesn’t mention the accuracy of the testing. http://www.consumerlab.com/ http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=521528 Consumer Reports sometimes evaluates supplements, but I think this site also requires a subscription: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/health-fitness/drug-supplement-index.htm I’d be interested to know about other third-party testing.

http://www.uni-vite.com/nutrishield http://www.drpaulclayton.com I believe that it is possible to stay healthy into ripe old age and to prevent, stabilise and even perhaps to reverse, many of the chronic degenerative diseases. Underpinning all my research and advice is this simple fact. Given the right nutrition and lifestyle, our bodies have amazing powers of self-healing and regeneration. They have to because almost every cell and tissue in your body breaks down and is replaced on a regular basis. Bone is re-absorbed into the body and then renewed, cartilage in joints experiences wear and tear but is renewed, membranes of nerve and other cells are broken down and replaced. This natural process of wear and repair is going on all the time in your trillions of cells. The process of growth and re-growth in bones, cartilage and other tissues is called anabolic. The process of tissue breakdown is called catabolic.

Nutrition and Your Mental Health What does nutrition have to do with mental health? You might be surprised to find out the truth behind what happens when a person has a nutritional deficiency. Nutritional deficiencies can cause all sorts of psychiatric symptoms including apathy, low energy, irritability, insomnia, low energy, agitation, fatigue, concentration problems, aches and pains, weight changes, including weight loss or weight gain. Sound a lot like the symptoms of depression? The truth is the average American diet of fast food is low in vital nutrition that you need for your body to function correctly. This isn’t to say that all depression is caused by bad nutrition but it’s certainly a contributing factor in many cases and poor nutrition will always make depression worse. Antidepressant drugs also do not correct nutritional problems. So if your depressed because of nutritional problems an antidepressant will only partially cover up the problem and you body still won’t function correctly. well, out of friendship, i was invited and attended one yesterday. but i did not sign up yet.
shall i be expecting from them to call me up again? what will i politely say to refuse?
i hear they are agressive and they have these tricky recruiting technique.
Well …here’s where you get to find out if they really are a "friend." Tell the person thank you but your really not interested ..at all.
Yes they may have been taught some wonderful come backs to over come your objections…. that’s O.K. ( Matter of fact, that’s great , I’ll show you why in a moment)
Again (politely) tell them no thank you, it’s just not what you want to do. Let them go on 2 maybe 3 times ( you did say it was a friend right? ) and then look them square in the eye and tell the person.
" THIS is why I DON’T want to join your company. I’m NOT going to ask people over & over to join something they don’t want to do."
Note: sometimes they simply bring a third person along to make it even more difficult for you to say NO. If it gets to much and you feel weird about it just tell them " I think I’m going to throw up, this is starting to make me sick." I’m not kidding that should do the trick.
Hope this helps,
Mike
P.S. You really don’t want to join any of those networking companies.
Do you take multivitamin supplements after working out or just in that day?

I dont take a supplement just designed for protein, but i take Theragran-M, which pretty much has 100%+ of everything. I’ve been taking it with meals like it says mostly lunch and sometime breakfast once a day. I workout everyday bu different parts of my body. Do i have to use a protein supplement or can i just use this, and do i have to use it every day or…?
Multivitamins don’t have any protein in them. You can have one MV once during the day and it may help, but it doesn’t matter when you have it. What matters is right after your workout (in the first 45 minutes is what the pro bodybuilders say) to have something high in protein, say 20-25 or more grams. That way you replenish your muscles with protein and get the fibers rebuilding after you’ve torn them working out. You could go out and buy protein powder for this purpose (whey protein is the most common) but you could also just have some chicken or cold cuts or milk, as long as you get that protein post-workout.
